Review of Planned Care and Recovery Team (CMHT) Wellingborough and East Northants written by a patient
6th January 2021

I've always felt that the Reception team are friendly, helpful and compassionate in person and on the phone and many of the staff are too, showing a caring and sympathetic manner towards me. But I feel my care is inconsistent and has often left me feeling unsafe because my needs seem to be unmet due to staff shortages or a lack of funding. Waiting a long time for treatment is hard having being diagnosed 11-12 years ago with a personality disorder by a doctor who did little to provide support at that time. I have experienced long term domestic abuse and been suicidal at times and self harmed too, yet I'm still waiting to begin treatment. I was very grateful to receive a call last year when lockdown began to check on my mental health and go through my support options and the psychiatrists are compassionate and very patient, mostly the duty workers are also responsive and supportive but one of them was very insensitive at a time when I was in crisis and actually made my mental state much worse.

Suggested improvements
I think communication needs to improve and the service needs to be more consistent. I used to have physical health checks because of the medication I take but they have stopped because of the pandemic and I don't think they are being resumed yet. A month ago, a nurse called from the PCaRT to say she needed to do a safety plan with me and when I was due to call her for our appointment I got a text message saying she was off work that week. I mentioned that I was having palpitations and anxiety and would like to discuss a review of my medication, which she said was urgent because it related to my heart and she would follow up with the team but I haven't heard back from anyone despite sending text messages to her. I don't really know what is happening with my care now, going through a pandemic without feeling properly supported is hard but my faith is strong. God never fails me!

i feel abandoned by the mental health team and the trust as a whole. i am receiving absolutely no treatment, care or support despite regularly bringing this to the attention of the MHT and the Trust. Despite this I feel totally ignored, dismissed, seen as of no consequence and that no-one can be bothered to do anythingabout it. Everyone is dismissive and uncaring and there is no support. I have been left like this all year in spite of repeated appeals for therapy and support but they always fall on deaf ears. all they want to do is promote soulless and anonymous useless stopgap "crisis" services in place of proper therapy & support by staff known to the patient. Trained, therapeutic and continuity. Instead like everything it's outsourced, put in a spreadsheet so admin can collect their shiny badges & bonuses and tick all the right boxes - patient care doesn't matter as long as they can meet all their targets and save 5% on the budget.

Suggested improvements
well you couldn't do anything much worse. no provision of therapy, no support, failure of crisis support, very poor response to complaints, the service seems to be run for the benefit of staff rather than the patients - i think the priorities need rethinking

Claire, Julie, Nadine and Emma have supported me fully since my hospital discharge. They are kind, compassionate and knowledgeable regarding my physical struggles. I always feel safe and happy to discuss anything with them. Their support has been exceptional and I do not think I would have progressed as much and be at the point I am today without their input. Thank you.

Dr Okongwu is absolutely amazing. I honestly cannot praise him and his practice enough. He is the best Doctor I have EVER seen (and I've seen a lot!). Dr Okongwu is the only person that has ever validated my experiences, genuinely listens and takes on board what is being said, and always has the best answers that help and support every situation I am struggling with. This man should be used as the highest example of how to provide proper care. He should be SO well paid and taken care of, for how well he treats everyone he meets. He truly is an exceptional person and the world would be a much better place if there were more Doctors like him. Please pass on this message if possible and let him know what an amazing person he is and what amazing care and support he gives. I cannot thank him enough.
